About Us

Ushindi for Women Organization (UWO) is Community Based Organization (CBO) founded in 2015 by a group of women champions for women and girls’ rights in JaraJara Location in Balambala Sub-County. The founding of UWO came at the backdrop rampant harmful cultural practices, including female genital mutilation and child marriages which impeded the opportunities for growth and development among girls and women. High school absenteeism and dropout cases among girls characterized the Balambala community as was too incidences of domestic violence; with women predominantly bearing the brunt. The women champions for women and girls’ rights came together to discuss on strategies of addressing the problem and thus Ushindi for Women Organization came into being as caucus for voice-amplification into the infringement of the rights of women and girls.

UWO was later (2022) registered with the Sub-County Social Development Office as Community Based Organization (CBO). The organization’s aim is to enhance the rights of women and girls in Balambala and beyond.

UWO is currently active in Balambala and Township Sub-Counties of Garissa County and with plans to cover all the 7 Sub-Counties in Garissa County.  UWO activities have, to date, been made possible with support from (source of funding).
